Report: Cardinal Erdő Suffered Stroke

Cardinal Péter Erdő, 73, of Budapest and Primate of Hungary, suffered a stroke and is recovering slowly in hospital, reports MessaInLatino.it.

No official statement has yet been released by the Archdiocese.

Cardinal Erdő was widely regarded as one of the leading figures of the conservative wing during the Conclave 2025.

Surgery in February

In February, Cardinal Erdő had undergone multiple surgical procedures. His condition was described as serious but not immediately life-threatening. In a letter to his priests, he said that the surgery had been unexpected.

He was absent during Lent and Holy Week including Easter ceremonies.

Cardinal Erdő did send an audio message to the faithful on Easter Sunday (April 5) while still convalescing from his February surgeries.
