Today, Leo XIV appointed Bishop Gerard Nash, 67, as Bishop of Ossory while he remains also Bishop of Ferns. The pope united two neighboring Irish dioceses in persona episcopi. Under this arrangement, both dioceses retain for now their separate legal identities but are entrusted to the same bishop. Bishop Nash has led the Diocese of Ferns since 2021 and has served as Apostolic Administrator of Ossory since January 2026. Together, the two dioceses serve less than 200,000 Catholics. The appointment marks another step in the ongoing restructuring of the shrinking Church in Ireland.
